mixed media painting
Sue Martin has been working with oil and cold wax medium for four years. Her subjects include abstracts, abstracted landscapes, and florals. Though she creates most of her cold wax pieces in the studio, she also takes her process (with some modification) outdoors for plein air events. She applies thin layers of oil paint, mixed 50/50 with cold wax medium, with bowl scrapers, old credit cards, squeegee, or palette knife. She blots paint off with newsprint, then applies more layers of different color values and temperature, until she’s happy with the design, color, and texture. She sometimes includes collage or stenciled design elements. “I love this process because it’s playful and produces beautiful and unexpected textures and patterns,” says Martin. Her work was part of an exhibition with Nancy Vorm at the Alice Gallery in Salt Lake City in 2016. Now they share a studio in the old Bogue Foundry Building, which also houses Salt Grass Printmakers and Modern West Fine Art. Martin also works in acrylic, watercolor and mixed media. She’s always experimenting with materials and processes, in a never ending quest for the most satisfying artistic experience and sublime results. Martin’s paintings have also been included in group shows at BDAC, Eccles Community Art Center, Woodbury Gallery in Orem, and Adobe HQ in Lehi. Sue holds a BFA degree in painting and drawing from University of Utah.
